Choosing Accent Pillows

In Interior Design on March 9, 2021 at 6:21 am

When you’re ready to give your room a facelift, but not quite a full remodel, adding or changing your accent pillows is one of the simplest ways to create a new esthetic.

Review these 4 quick tips from The Linen Duck, a boutique furniture store in Columbia, TN, before you invest in new pillows.

  1. Choose the right insert

The Linen DuckTypically, your insert should be 2” bigger than the cover. This ensures you have a plump pillow. Your pillow fiber will also determine if you have a full or slouchy pillow. Polyester inserts are typically less expensive and will allow for a full pillow. The downside to polyester-filled pillows is that they’re usually stiff and not very comfortable. Using a down/feather-filled insert creates a higher-end look with the bonus of comfort. Plus, using a down-filled insert is the only way to achieve a “pillow chop”.

  1. Layer the look

The Linen DuckGrouping your pillows on your sofa will always look better when you layer the sizes. There isn’t one right way to do this, but a good rule for most sofas would be to start with a 22” or 24” pillow and then adding a 20” or smaller pillow in front. When you have a larger sofa or a sectional, you can add in an 18” pillow or a lumbar. Usually, you can get away with one pillow in chairs. Most chairs look best with a 20”-22” pillow or a lumbar pillow the width of the chair. If you have larger chairs, try a 20” pillow layered with a 15” lumbar.

  1. Play with patterns and textures

The Linen DuckAs with all textiles, mixing patterns, colors, and textures properly is key to creating the best design. Large patterns work best on the larger pillows, while unique details added to smaller pillows and lumbar pillows will make a big statement. Once you have picked your larger pattern, bring in a compatible pillow in a solid or smaller print. Adding a small pillow or a lumbar with a fun texture or detail such as trim, tassels, or even feathers can elevate your room by adding more character and style. Boutique furniture stores have a wide range of options and brands to choose from.

  1. Be creative and don’t skimp

The Linen DuckAccent pillows are just that, accents. Use them to bring in color and bold patterns. Remember, this is how you are redefining your room, so make it count. If you have been living with gray accents, now is your opportunity to add in some jewel tones in rich colors of green, blue, or purple. This will create a whole new look while keeping a calm atmosphere. If you’re wanting a livelier space, add in pillows with red or yellow tones. Accent pillows aren’t forever, so don’t be afraid to pick pillows that are exciting that can be swapped out at any time.

Accent pillows come in all price ranges. It is good to know what to expect before you start shopping. Less expensive poly-filled pillows are great for outdoor spaces, guest bedrooms, and in general, rooms that aren’t dependent on the pillows to pull the design together. If you are redecorating and trying to make a statement with your accent pillows, expect to make an investment. A 22”-24” down/feather-inserted pillow will range anywhere from $75 – $300. Look for pillows with a quality insert and exceptional fabrics at your preferred boutique furniture shop — The Linen Duck — for the best look.
