Typically, your insert should be 2” bigger than the cover. This ensures you have a plump pillow. Your pillow fiber will also determine if you have a full or slouchy pillow. Polyester inserts are typically less expensive and will allow for a full pillow. The downside to polyester-filled pillows is that they’re usually stiff and not very comfortable. Using a down/feather-filled insert creates a higher-end look with the bonus of comfort. Plus, using a down-filled insert is the only way to achieve a “pillow chop”.
