Merriam-Webster Tabs ‘Culture’ as Word of the Year

In General on December 28, 2014 at 8:24 am

CultureMerriam-Webster has announced that “culture” is the English dictionary’s word of the year for 2014.

The company selects its word of the year based on number of online searches, and overall presence in the media, among other criteria.

The definition of “culture,” according to Merriam-Webster, is the “beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place, or time.”

Among the other most notable words of the year included “feminism,” insidious,” “innovation,” “morbidity,” “autonomy,” “surreptitious,” “nostalgia” and “je ne sais quoi.” The Merriam-Webster 2013 word of the year was “science.” “Capitalism” and “socialism” shared top honors in 2012.

“Culture” was not connected with any single event in 2014, but rather dominated the news headlines on a consistent basis due to its many uses. Popular topics this year included “company culture,” “rape culture” and “celebrity culture.”

Online searches for the word “feminism” remained strong throughout the course of 2014, according to company leaders. “Feminism” was used in correlation with the Gamergate controversy and the Hobby Lobby decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. When Time Magazine released its annual list of the “100 Most Influential People” – featuring Pharrell Williams, Miley Cyrus and Beyonce – the word saw another major spike in online traffic.

Along with its main publication, Merriam-Webster has published dictionaries of Spanish/English, slang, sports terms, medical terms, proper names, biography, geography, English usage and synonyms.  Non-dictionary publications available around the world are Encyclopedia of World Religions Collegiate Thesaurus, Encyclopedia of Literature, Manual for Writers and Editors, Secretarial Handbook and Collegiate Encyclopedia.

Merriam-Webster was created by researcher Noah Webster in 1828 as a way to expand the conversation about language among cultures around the world. In his quest for greater knowledge, he learned a total of 26 languages, including English, Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, Aramaic, Hebrew, Russian, Welsh, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Latin, Greek, German and Gothic.

AlabamaHuntsville is perhaps best known for being the home of engineers, military personnel and expensive rockets. A new study shows that the Alabama city is also known for an abundance of satisfied workers.

The Quantum Workplace survey ranks Huntsville first in terms of employee recognition. The organization examined surveys from nearly 400,000 employees at 5,000 organizations throughout the United States in order to determine which locations had the happiest employees.

The forms of recognition include praise from senior leadership, time off for vacations, access to training and learning opportunities, and pay increases.

In Huntsville, 73 percent of employees said they felt comfortable with the level of recognition given by their superiors. Nashville (69 percent) assumed runner-up position, with Austin, Texas; San Antonio, Texas; and Washington, D.C. finishing in a three-way for third with 68 percent.

The top ten rankings were Atlanta, Georgia (67 percent); Charlotte, North Carolina (67 percent); Orlando, Florida (67 percent); Raleigh, North Carolina (67 percent); and Tampa, Florida (67 percent).

Employees said that pay raises are the best possible way to recognize excellent work, followed by promotions, bonuses, time flexibility and training opportunities. On the other hand, managers should bypass company-branded merchandise such as medals and plaques. Only 5 percent of employees said that these items were important to them.

Eating Healthy in a World Full of Diets

In General on December 21, 2013 at 6:05 am

PresentationSolutions - Healthy eatingThere are hundreds of different diets and myriad confusing guidelines for how to eat. Even the experts can’t seem to come to a consensus on the best diet to follow: no-carb, paleolithic, no-fruit, only fruit, etc. In reality, however, there isn’t just one nutritional plan that’s right for everyone. By following guidelines set forth by the USDA, most Americans can achieve health, energy and a better body.

The USDA recommends a number of foods that should be consumed as part of a balanced diet.

Avocados are a must-eat food. They are a great source of healthy fats and help your body absorb nutrients.

Berries are jam-packed with vitamins, fiber and antioxidants. Blueberries have the highest dose of those powerful antioxidants.

Cinnamon is one of those must-have spices everyone should work into their diets. Research shows that less than a teaspoon a day can help regulate blood sugar.

Eggs have received a bad reputation due to their high cholesterol content. However, research shows there is limited evidence linking egg consumption to heart disease. Besides, this high-protein food only has 70 calories and numerous vitamins and minerals.

Olive oil is a triple win because it’s full of antioxidants and monounsaturated fats, and it’s still delicious.

Nuts are loaded with protein, antioxidants, and a variety of vitamins and minerals.

Kale is a leafy green vegetable loaded with vitamins A, K and C, calcium and fiber. Kale is also packed with many antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Quinoa is a grain that is a complete source of protein and is packed with fiber and omega-3 fatty acids.

Greek yogurt has twice as much protein as regular yogurt and is filled with probiotics, which help keep the immune system strong.

Almond milk has the consistency of cow’s milk but half the calories without the dairy. It’s great for someone with lactose intolerance.

United Faith Church Q&A on Worship

In General on December 19, 2013 at 4:11 pm

United Faith ChurchWhat is Worship? Should I worship God at home or at church? United Faith Church describes worship that is pleasing to God.

United Faith Church of Barnegat, NJ is a non-denominational, Bible-believing church established in 2006. United Faith Church exists to share the love of the Father to all people in the Barnegat community and surrounding areas. Recently, Pastor Jerry and Pastor Janeth Santiago of United Faith Church sat down for a conversation with Presentation Solutions to discuss how worship is more than a song; it is a lifestyle of praise and adoration, connecting the heart of the believer to the Father.

Presentation Solutions: What is worship?

United Faith Church: We teach that worship is one of the ways believers express thankfulness and adoration to God, not only for all that He does, but for who He is. God is the very one who, out of love, created us and continually gives us life and breath through His Son, Jesus Christ. For the people of United Faith Church in Barnegat, worship is a response to the goodness of God. United Faith Church teaches that worship is not just a form of singing or clapping, but it is a lifestyle. The Bible clearly instructs that believers are to worship “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:24). United Faith Church believes that to worship in spirit and in truth is to not only to sing, clap, or dance unto the Lord, but to live a life in alignment with the Word of God.

Presentation Solutions: What happens when believers worship?

United Faith Church: During worship believers begin to give glory, honor, and praise to the Lord Jesus. The Scriptures state that “the Lord inhabits the praises of His people” (Ps 22:3). As believers at United Faith Church begin to worship, the Lord inhabits their praises. This is exemplified as the presence of God fills the place where His people worship and the atmosphere of heaven comes to earth. United Faith Church delights in the presence of God that refreshes and empowers His Church during these times of worship. United Faith Church in Barnegat teaches that worship is also a time that God’s people come to a deeper knowledge and understanding of His heart. It is in worship that the bond of intimacy between the Lord Jesus and His children is strengthened.

Presentation Solutions: Why do you believe that personal acts of worship are so important to God?

United Faith Church: Throughout the Bible there are countless examples of people who either worshipped the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, or the gods of other nations. United Faith Church acknowledges that God’s desire is for mankind to worship Him and Him alone. God pours out His blessing on those who solely worship Him because it is a fulfillment of His will. At United Faith Church, believers are taught to worship God because it pleases Him and brings glory to His Name. As believers worship, they are joining with all of heaven in submission to the Lord of All. God cherishes and lovingly receives the worship of His children as a fragrant offering, and He blesses them with His presence.

Presentation Solutions: How does worship in the Church today compare to worship of the Old and New Testament?

United Faith Church: In the Old Testament of the Bible, Israel’s greatest weapon of warfare was worship. When the people of Israel were outnumbered and faced with the deadly threat of war, they would begin to worship God. The result of Israel’s worship was victory over their enemies. King David, of the Old Testament, worshipped in times of joy, sorrow, victory, and even in times of loss. United Faith Church encourages believers that in all seasons we are to worship God as King, just as His people did in the Old Testament.

United Faith Church in Barnegat believes Christians become victorious over their circumstances as they worship the Lord Jesus. The beauty and power of worship is evident in the New Testament as well. Paul and Silas, while imprisoned, began to worship the Lord Jesus in the middle of the night. As Paul and Silas worshiped, God shook the foundations of the prison and set them free. In United Faith Church, believers learn to worship in the midst of all situations, whether good or bad. United Faith Church has experienced the freedom and victory that comes as God’s people worship their Lord, just as it had first been established with King David and will continue to be until we join with the angels in heaven.

Presentation Solutions: So, do you teach that God should be worshiped individually or corporately?

United Faith Church: Both! It is equally important for believers to worship God individually and corporately. United Faith Church recognizes the importance of a personal relationship with God through worship. Believers should individually practice worshiping the Lord Jesus as they seek to grow and come to a deeper knowledge of Him. United Faith Church also acknowledges the importance of God’s Church joining together to worship in unity. We are not to “forsake the gathering” (Heb. 10:25). God’s Church is a family of believers, and as a family it is important not to neglect having a corporate time of worship, which strengthens the unity amongst His people.

Presentation Solutions: How would you describe a worship service at United Faith Church in Barnegat?

United Faith Church: Worship services at United Faith Church usually include the reading of Scripture, prayer, and songs of worship. Through prayer and preparation, services at United Faith Church are arranged in advance, but are ultimately led by the Holy Spirit. At United Faith Church, believers may experience a time of thankfulness and celebration, a time to stand in awe of the holiness of God, a time of refreshment, and even a time of healing as God touches His people. Altogether, worship at United Faith Church is coming into the presence of God in order to give Him glory and experience His great power, love, and renewal.

Presentation Solutions: Why might your people sing, clap, and even lift their hands during worship?

United Faith Church: At United Faith Church, many believers may sing, clap, lift their hands, or even dance during worship as an outward expression of an inward transformation. As believers seek the Lord Jesus, they are transformed from the inside out. The Lord Jesus heals their brokenness and cleanses them from their sins against God. As believers experience this awesome work of the Lord Jesus, an inner joy begins to grow deep within. At United Faith Church, some believers express this inner joy by singing, clapping, dancing, or by many other expressions of celebration and thankfulness to God for all that He has done. This is what the Word speaks about when it declares that “the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).

Presentation Solutions: Much of the content in today’s music contains sexual, violent and self-degrading messages that have influenced our culture. How do you see worship counteracting the effects of such messages?

United Faith Church: Everything that we hear or set our minds on has an effect on our thinking. Today, so much music is filled with messages of fornication, drug abuse, violence, murder, and many other subjects that are opposed to God’s Word. These messages have negatively influenced our culture by promoting sinful behavior and rebellion against the ways of God.

United Faith Church teaches that as believers worship the Lord Jesus their minds become focused on His character. When believers focus their minds on the Lord Jesus and His Word, they become kingdom-minded. In other words, their thought-life becomes filled with Godly thoughts that enable believers to worship in spirit and in truth. The Word of God states to, “Fix your eyes upon Jesus” (Heb. 12:2). United Faith Church teaches that when we fix our eyes on Jesus, the sinful desires of the world and our flesh fade away, producing pure hearts of worship.

Interview of the Week: Charles C. Brennan Celebrates Dollar Loan Center’s 15th Anniversary

In General on November 16, 2013 at 4:57 am

Charles C. BrennanCharles C. Brennan founded Dollar Loan Center 15 years ago, with a mission to provide loans to residents that are a more affordable alternative to payday loans. With a background in rock concert promotion, Charles C. Brennan has helped Dollar Loan Center grow from its original Las Vegas, Nevada, location into a successful franchise, with 80 locations throughout Nevada, California, Utah and South Dakota.

Today, Dollar Loan Center maintains its original focus on community-based customer service that Charles C. Brennan instilled in the organization. Not only has Charles C. Brennan opened new locations, he has also converted several mom-and-pop businesses into Dollar Loan Center locations. On the eve of the company’s 15th anniversary, Presentation Solutions spoke with Charles C. Brennan about the company’s accomplishments, as well as what he hopes to achieve through the business in the future.

Presentation Solutions: What sets Dollar Loan Center apart?

Charles C. Brennan: Our business model is an excellent alternative to the traditional payday loan concept. Instead of charging a flat fee to hold a check, we specialize in signature loans.

Presentation Solutions: How does a signature loan work?

Charles C. Brennan: We don’t require someone to plop down a postdated check. Instead, customers are given a loan that accumulates simple interest on a daily basis.

Presentation Solutions: What prompted you to create Dollar Loan Center?

Charles C. Brennan: There was nothing like it, leaving consumers who wanted a short-term loan no choice but to do business with a traditional payday loan location.

Presentation Solutions: Does your loan model require a checking account?

Charles C. Brennan: Not at all. Because of our signature loan model, we’re able to provide loans to those who have been unable to obtain help because of changes in the banking industry.

Presentation Solutions: But doesn’t offering low rates cut into your profits?

Charles C. Brennan: We’ve been able to remain profitable through taking time to make sure our underwriting process covers everything, as well as by following through on collections. This saves customers money while also helping us continue to grow.

Presentation Solutions: Your stores go by the slogan, “Your community leader.” Why is that?

Charles C. Brennan: Dollar Loan Center is an active part of every single community in which we’re located. We believe in not just helping our customers, but getting to know the people who are impacted by our assistance.

Presentation Solutions: In addition to your locations, you offer online lending. How can someone obtain a loan online?

Charles C. Brennan: Through our website, dontbebroke.com, consumers can fill out a simple application and receive payment either in one of our stores or online through direct deposit.

Presentation Solutions: Can anyone apply for a loan online?

Charles C. Brennan: To participate, a consumer has to be located in one of the four states in which Dollar Loan Center is located. The direct deposit option also requires a checking account, but consumers without one can still start the ball rolling online, and then pick up cash at one of our many locations.

In addition to his work with Dollar Loan Center, Charles C. Brennan is also the founder of the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy in South Dakota. Through this academy, Charles C. Brennan helps disadvantaged youth learn music.

Tips from Nationwide Relocation Services – Judging a Moving Company By Its Estimator

In General on October 30, 2013 at 1:37 am

Nationwide Relocation ServicesAccording to Nationwide Relocation Services, homeowners can determine the suitability of a moving company by the attentiveness of their estimator. If an estimator can answer all questions with patience and ease, then your mind should be put to rest, says Nationwide Relocation Services. Here, a spokesperson from Nationwide Relocation Services describes in detail what questions are necessary during initial conversations with an estimator.

Presentation Solutions: We’re happy to have you here for a chat.

Nationwide Relocation Services: Thanks for the opportunity!

Presentation Solutions: What should someone ask of a mover before acquiring these services?

Nationwide Relocation Services: A good barometer is how long the company has been in business, and if any company name changes have taken place.

Presentation Solutions: Where can I find written documentation to verify these details?

Nationwide Relocation Services: A mover should always be able to provide both a DOT and MC number to certify their work.

Presentation Solutions: What do these numbers mean?

Nationwide Relocation Services: These numbers verify that the mover is insured, licensed and prepared to carry out your wishes.

Presentation Solutions: What are some questions that the moving company estimator should ask?

Nationwide Relocation Services: The most important question is whether the client is moving an apartment or house.

Presentation Solutions: Seems like a no-brainer.

Nationwide Relocation Services: It does, but some estimators choose to rush through the conversation without paying attention to the client’s needs.

Presentation Solutions: What else should be discussed?

Nationwide Relocation Services: Next, it should be determined whether the moving company is delivering a self-storage unit or picking your belongings up.

Presentation Solutions: Is a detailed account of your belongings necessary at this time?

Nationwide Relocation Services: Be as thorough as possible. The most important items to note include furniture and the total number of boxes being shipped.

Presentation Solutions: What items are typically packed by the mover?

Nationwide Relocation Services: Generally these items will include clothes, books, lamps, televisions, kitchen items and electronic equipment.

Presentation Solutions: Are all your moving plans the same?

Nationwide Relocation Services: Not at all. Our team develops customized moving programs for each individual client.

Presentation Solutions: That’s very helpful.

Nationwide Relocation Services:  If your estimator doesn’t offer the same personalized strategy, steer clear.

Presentation Solutions: Is there follow up assistance available for clients after the initial conversation with an estimator?

Nationwide Relocation Services: At Nationwide. a moving consultant is available at all times to answer questions that might arise during this process.

Presentation Solutions: Overall, what thought do you want to leave with our readers?

Nationwide Relocation Services: Online tools such as cost calculators can be informative, but nothing beats communicating with a real live person who will provide insight into your particular situation.

Presentation Solutions: It’s been a pleasure speaking with you today.

Nationwide Relocation Services: Thank you for your time.

Throughout its history, Nationwide Relocation Services has coordinated a variety of services including long distance moving, interstate moving and corporate moving. Dave Contarino and his wife, Linda Marquette-Contarino, are co-owners of Bueno Title and Escrow. In its six-year history under Linda’s guidance, Bueno has grown to become a leading title company in town.   Dave Contarino and Linda Marquette-Contarino have enjoyed serving the community while embracing the unique culture the city offers.

Dave Contarino says that Las Cruces is now one of the most popular travel destinations in the Southwest. Right at the crossroads of Interstate 10 and 25, Las Cruces attracts visitors with its beautiful vistas and local charms.  One of its highlights is historic Old Mesilla and its beautiful plaza replete with restaurants, shops and art galleries. For Dave Contarino, the first-class Mexican food is a particular highlight. The warm and welcoming environment of Las Cruces provides Dave Contarino and other regular visitors with a treasure trove of possible activities.

The weather in Las Cruces is a major drawing card, affirms Dave Contarino, with the town experiencing up to 350 days of sunshine each year. Temperatures during the summer often reach the high 90s, while nighttime lows fall into the 60s. Dave Contarino notes that the fall air is cooler, as daytime highs generally hit the mid-70s or low 80s.

Located in the Mesilla Valley, Las Cruces is a true oasis in the western United States around the holidays, says Dave Contarino. While northern states contend with mounds of snow during the winter months, Las Cruces enjoys temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. Dave Contarino also says that the city receives a minimal amount of rainfall each year—8.5 inches—and no more than a couple of inches of snow each winter.

According to Dave Contarino, Las Cruces has earned numerous awards and accolades. Money magazine named Las Cruces, home of New Mexico State University, among its “best college towns to retire.” Meanwhile, Dave Contarino reports that AARP considers Las Cruces a “dream town” for retirees. Dave Contarino notes that Las Cruces was ranked by Forbes as one of the best small metro areas for careers and general business.

Dave Contarino explains that title insurance provides the consumer with financial protection in case title problems are determined due to human error or hidden hazards.

The title department of Bueno Title and Escrow consists of highly skilled examiners and title searchers who perform a thorough and reliable title search, relates Dave Contarino. Their job is to assist the customer by verifying all title information for transference of ownership. Dave Contarino shares that his wife, Linda Marquette, has formed a series of friendships throughout her stint leading the firm.

Dave Contarino, Linda Marquette and the Bueno Title and Escrow staff encourage all travelers to make a trip to Las Cruces and discover for themselves the vast arts, entertainment, sporting and culinary events presented on a daily basis.

Real Estate Developer Scott Sohr on Nashville’s Up-and-Coming Hot Spots: Germantown

In General on October 18, 2013 at 9:15 am

Scott Sohr NashvilleScott Sohr, Nashville land developer, has been a fixture in the Nashville real estate scene for two decades and says Nashville has made unparalleled growth over the last 10 years. Case in point: Germantown, a place Scott Sohr of Nashville claims wasn’t even on the radar a few years ago but is now a major point of interest for visitors and developers alike.

PresentationSolutions.org: Thank you for visiting with us today. Let’s talk Nashville. What is your favorite area?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: I love the entire city, but especially Germantown.

PresentationSolutions.org: Where is Germantown?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Germantown is located just outside of Nashville’s main downtown area. It is bordered by Rosa Parks Boulevard to the east, 3rd Avenue North to the west, Jefferson Street to the north, and Hume Street to the south.

PresentationSolutions.org: Who originally lived in this area?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Germantown, along with the rest of Nashville, was initially inhabited by Cherokee and Chickasaw Tribes. The entire area was a popular hunting ground because of the river. James McGavock later purchased the area.

PresentationSolutions.org: Who is James McGavock?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: McGavock was an officer during the Revolutionary War. He was granted ownership of approximately 2,200 acres in 1786. A portion of this land would become the 9th Ward and eventually renamed Germantown.

PresentationSolutions.org: Why was the neighborhood renamed?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: The neighborhood became known as Germantown because of a large influx of German immigrants who were living in the area.

PresentationSolutions.org: What is the Assumption Catholic Church?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: One of Nashville’s oldest churches—the second oldest Catholic church in the area. It stands in its original Germantown location, where it was built in 1906.

PresentationSolutions.org: Who are some notable Nashvillians from the area?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: While Nashville is known for mostly breeding country music superstars, the Germantown area is home to a number of prominent German families. Perhaps the most notable name from the area is brewer George Dickel.

PresentationSolutions.org: What is Germantown’s horseracing history?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Prior to Tennessee’s ban on horseracing, the area now known as Morgan Park was a popular racetrack. Burns Island racetrack was also in close proximity to Frederick Laitenberger’s German beer garden, which was closed along with the track.

PresentationSolutions.org: What architectural features are common in Germantown?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Germantown is home to an eclectic blend of architecture, ranging from lavish mansions to modest immigrant accommodations. Today, the area also boasts a number of upscale apartment and condominium complexes.

PresentationSolutions.org: What is the average home value in Germantown?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Homes range between $150,000 on the low end to $500,000 and above.

PresentationSolutions.org: When was Germantown designated as an Inner City Arboretum?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: In 1993. There are more than 130 different types of trees and shrubs in the Germantown area.

PresentationSolutions.org: When is Oktoberfest?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: The second weekend in October. This year, 2013 marks the sixth annual Germantown Oktoberfest, which draws tens of thousands of visitors to the Germantown area every year.

PresentationSolutions.org: What types of foods are available during the festival?

Scott Sohr, Nashville: Oktoberfest vendors serve up both German and American fare. Of course, no German festival would be complete without beer. Both local and German draughts are available.

Exercise Is Necessary for Working Professionals

In General on October 11, 2013 at 6:09 pm

10.10.13 exerciseExercise is one of the best ways to alleviate stress, but one of the biggest challenges for working professionals is carving out the time. Everyone knows it is important to stay in shape, but work and family obligations always seem to get in the way. What the busy executive often fails to see is that everything and everyone suffers when he or she neglects his or her health.

In a perfect world everyone could commit a one- to two-hour time slot in the middle of their day to dedicate to healthy activities, but with all the responsibilities and time constraints of a busy life exercise is rarely seen as a priority. The good news is that new studies indicate it isn’t necessary to dedicate an hour or two at a set time of day to realize the benefits of exercise. And it isn’t necessary to head to the gym to get a workout.

Everyone has a few minutes of downtime each day. Five or 10 minutes here and there throughout the day are fairly easy to find. Contrary to what most people think, it is not necessary to exercise in one continuous block of time. As little as 20 minutes spread throughout the day can produce results. If you have a few minutes before the next meeting or lunch, do 15 or 20 push-ups or sit-ups. These are examples of exercise that can be performed at home, in the office, or in a hotel room when traveling. No equipment necessary.

Find ways to be creative about activities. Park away from the building and walk, use the stairs instead of the elevator, do a few toe touches and jumping jacks. Sitting doesn’t have to mean relaxing. There are several exercises that can be performed in a chair to strengthen and tone the upper and lower body and core muscles. A quick Internet search will provide details of chair exercises.
A body in motion is a good start toward being healthier and looking better, so don’t sit if you can stand and don’t stand if you can walk. Beginning today, set some reasonable goals and get moving.
